CAL:ON Day 2026
This week, the CAL:ON Cymru team came together at 58³Ô¹Ï to celebrate our first academic year and look ahead to the next phase of the Centre's work.
Colleagues travelled from across Wales, as well as from the University of York and OxEd & Assessment, to reflect on this year’s milestones, which included:
- Establishing the Centre and building the team
- Developing a bilingual professional learning offer for primary and secondary teachers
- Developing three programmes and interventions in Welsh and in English for primary and secondary-aged children.
- Widespread rollout of ReadingScreen and LanguageScreen assessments
- Recruiting almost 300 schools across Wales to evaluate our offer this September
- Working closely with all of our partners
We also discussed what lies ahead as CAL:ON Cymru enters its second year. The next phase will involve extensive testing of our resources, professional learning modules, and assessments, which will strengthen the evidence base that underpins our literacy support package for schools ahead of its national rollout after September 2027.
The day was a valuable opportunity to reflect on the scale and scope of our mission, celebrate what has been achieved so far, and discuss the task ahead of us. It was also a day to recognise the expertise within CAL:ON Cymru and the team’s commitment to supporting schools and improving literacy outcomes in Wales.
