Overview

This module provides students with a critical understanding of the relationship between business activities and human rights obligations. Through an examination of standards and initiatives on business and human rights and case studies, students explore contemporary challenges faced by businesses in respecting and promoting human rights, including issues related to supply chains, labour standards, environmental impact, and community engagement

Students will study a range of issues connected with 'Business and Human Rights' including, but not limited to, the following topics:

Foundations of Business and Human Rights

International Legal Frameworks

National Legal Frameworks and State Duties

Corporate Mechanisms and Accountability

Human Rights Defenders and Stakeholder Engagement

Contemporary Issues

Learning Outcomes

• Analyse and synthesise the principal international standards and initiatives, assessing their effectiveness and proposing informed recommendations for improving corporate human rights compliance.

• Critically appraise the conceptual and practical debates surrounding the extension of human rights obligations to businesses, including the positive and negative impacts of corporate activity on the enjoyment of human rights.

• Critically evaluate international legal frameworks, case law, and guiding principles relating to business and human rights, including obligations, due diligence, and reporting standards.

• Develop reasoned solutions to complex business and human rights scenarios through the application of legal rules, case law, and scholarly literature, including assessment of access to remedies for corporate human rights abuses.
