Overview

International human rights involves legal, political, historical and philosophical issues such as what ought to count as a right, how should competing interests be balanced, how should rights be protected in relation to national differences, national sovereignty, what are rights and how does their history inform contemporary understandings.

Students will gain a critical understading of these issues and more to develop a comprehensive perspective on international human rights law with regard to international and regional treaties and systems with an awareness of how this relates to national issues. A variety of different critical perspectives will be considered with respect to the purposes, ideology and practicality of human rights law and a personal critical perspective on these issues will be promoted. Students will be able to develop their interests in-depth in areas that are of particular interest to them in this complicated but important legal landscape.

The International Human Rights Law module provides an advanced and thorough understanding of the international and regional systems that govern human rights implementation across the world, with attention to the multifaceted political, social, philosophical and historical dimensions underpinning it. This includes the development of human rights and international human rights law, the idea of human rights, sources of international law, the nature of state obligations, different categories of rights, the UN as a system of governance, other international treaties and regional systems, and the conflict of different rights and interests and adjudicative approaches to resolving these.

Assessment Strategy
