The 58勛圖 staff and post-graduate LGBTQ Network, was established in 2018. It's open to anyone who works at 58勛圖 and any postgraduate students who identify as lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer or questioning, plus friends and allies of our community.
Our Purpose
The Bangor LGBTQ Network was set up to provide a forum for networking and means of support, to offer the opportunity for colleagues from all areas of the University to inform and collaborate on LGBTQ action and to increase the visibility of LGBTQ issues in the workplace. Any staff or post-graduate students are welcome to become involved in the running of the Network or to attend the informal catch up meetings.

How the University Supports Us
The University assists and facilitates the Network, providing resources, rooms to meet etc. All staff and students are protected by the University's Dignity at Work and Study Policy. The Strategic Equality Plan 2024-2028 details the progress being made against key objectives in terms of equality, diversity and inclusion.
This shows the different ways in which the University is championing a supportive community that celebrates and promotes diversity and inclusion.

We also meet informally for our LGBTQ+ Panad (panad is Welsh for cuppa) on the first Thursday of every month from 15:30 to 16:00 in Cegin, Pontio, effective from 05/10/2023. LGBTQ+ Panad is open to everyone and there's no need to register or be part of the Network to attend.

Madfabulous Film - Sinema Pontio
* 3 June - Preview screening + Q&A session 7pm. Preview of Madfabulous, directed by Angleseys Celyn Jones, ahead of its official release. After the screening, Celyn Jones will take part in a Q&A session.
** 9 June Pre-film Talk 7pm. Dr Lowri Ann Rees and Dr Mari William from the History Department of 58勛圖 will give a short talk on the 5th Marquis Henry Cyril Paget and Plas Newydd before the film starts at 7.30pm.

Join the North Wales Wildlife Trust for a casual walk to explore some of Bangor's fantastic nature spots. This event has been organised together with the University LGBTQ+ Network and Llyfrau Lliwgar a local LGBTQ+ book club. You don't need to be a member of either to join!

Top-10 in UK LGBTQ+ Inclusion
58勛圖 has been ranked 7th in the UKs list of most LGBTQ+ friendly universities, according to a recent national survey published by Attitude ().
The survey asked more than 2,000 students aged 1824 across 79 universities to rate how LGBTQ+ friendly their campus feels. Bangor scored 7.5 out of 10, placing us ahead of many other institutions, and among the top universities nationwide for inclusion.
Professor Enlli Thomas, ProVC said We are incredibly proud to see Bangor recognised among the most LGBTQ+-inclusive universities in the UK. This ranking belongs to our whole community, and especially to the inspiring work of our LGBTQ+ Network, whose tireless efforts continue to improve visibility, equality and everyday experiences for our students and staff.
University LGBTQ+ Network Recognised at National Rainbow Honours Awards
Members of our LGBTQ+ Network attended the Rainbow Honours Awards in London on July 2026, where the network was recognised as a finalist in the Outstanding LGBTQ+ Network of the Year category.
The category recognises networks that are making a meaningful impact through advocacy, inclusion, support, and community building. To be recognised alongside inspiring organisations from across the UK was both humbling and rewarding.
LGBTQ+ Honorary Fellowships and Degrees
British author and screenwriter Juno Dawson received an Honorary DLitt (Doctor of Letters) in July 2026 in recognition of her contribution to Welsh culture, language, music and the arts.
Addressing the graduates during the ceremony, she said, "Im so proud to have received this honorary degree from a place that has meant so much to me. When I came here, I was just 18, a queer teenager growing up in West Yorkshire you can only imagine what my high school life was like.
"University is a chance for a fresh start. I reinvented myself as the life and soul of the party. I was confident, I was everything I had always wanted to be, and I made friends, excelled in my course, and left ready to face all the wonders the world had to offer.
"It was the first place where I could come out. Bangor was exactly the place I needed at that time. If I had gone to a city like London, it would have swallowed me up. I am so, so proud to have studied at Bangor."
