Students Set up Innovative Recycling Campaign
This week (5-9 12.11) the Students鈥� Union in Bangor set up a new, innovative recycling campaign, targeting bras!
Clothing is often forgotten about as a recyclable resource, even more so in the case of underwear, which many charity shops will not even accept to re-use. The Students鈥� Union noticed this gap in the recycling market and working with Oxfam, are running a campaign called 鈥楤angor鈥檚 Bras for Africa鈥� to collect old and unused bras, keep them out of landfill, and give them a new life in the developing world.
Oxfam describe how 鈥淏ras are complex to manufacture so very few developing countries have the facilities to make their own. For this reason, second hand bras are a valuable commodity. In fact, they are the single most desirable item of clothing. In particular British bras are seen as very high quality and are much sought after.鈥�
So between the 2nd-9th Dec we鈥檒l be holding a 鈥楤ra Bank鈥� week and collecting your old bras to donate to Oxfam who鈥檒l get them out to where they are needed in the developing world.
You can find donation boxes at Academi Shop, Students鈥� Union, Maes Glas, Bar Uno, Fridd Shop & Y Bistro.Between the 2nd-9th December Student Union run bra donation boxes will be available at the Academi Shop, the Students鈥� Union building, Maes Glas Sports Centre, Bar Uno, Friddoedd Shop and Y Bistro caf茅 on the Normal site.
The Students鈥� Union already has plans for more collection weeks and other recycling projects for the future.
